Highly revered in some cultures, the almond is described in the Bible as "among the best of fruits." Technically, the almond is actually a seed from the fruit of the almond tree. The delicately flavored and versatile almond is not only delicious but offers numerous health benefits as well.

Almonds are low in carbohydrates and high in monounsaturated fats. Recent research further associates almonds in lowering the blood presence of HDLs (high-density lipoproteins) and LDLs (low-density lipoproteins) This research suggest that almonds, like many nuts, is linked with a lower risk for heart disease when used as part of a healthy diet.

Almonds are also high in protein. A quarter-cup of almond contains more protein than an average egg.

Culinary uses:

While almonds are often eaten raw or toasted, it is a very popular topping on many deserts, including ice cream, cake and pastries.

Almonds can also be made into almond butter, sometimes used as a substitute for peanut butter for those with allergies and almond milk, for lactose intolerant persons or vegans.
